Information about Deskati
Location
Deskati is the second largest city of the province of Grevena and it is located on the South East part of the province. The municipality of Deskati includes the villages of Dasoxori, Paraskevi, Gilofo, Paliouria, and Panagia.
The city of Deskati is build on the South slopes of mountain Kambounia. Its altitude is 860 meters above sea level and it covers an area of 126 square kilometers. Its distance from the capital of the province of Grevena is 60km. Deskati is in an area where the provinces of Kozani, Grevena, Trikala and Larisa meet.
General characteristics
The population of Deskati (surrounding villages included) is about 5000 people, while during the months of summer this becomes 6500. The climate of the area is considered very healthy: dry and cool especially in the months of summer. The surroundig vegetation consists mainly of pine and beech-trees.
The main feature of the city in the past was the three stream that cut right through the city. According to a common view, the name Deskati comes from the Blach verb Disikare which means "to cut through".
The area includes two natural water springs that were the main source of water in the past. These are Krioneri that is today used by the village Paraskevi and Vrisopoula in the area Kagiathka.
The area of Deskati has been populated since ancient times. It is worth noting that in the area of Kagiathka a treasure of very valuable ancient coins was found in 1914.
Areas of interest
The area of Deskati includes spectacular scenery and natural beauty. Behind Kambounia the North mountain of Deskati, one can find Aliakmona one of the largest rivers of Greece. A large portion of this mountain is to become a national park as many birds and animals (including roe-dears) live in the area. One can enjoy very beautiful views from the top of mount Tretimos, and also from the locations Katafigio and from the peak Prionos both found on mount Kambounia. Peak Prionos is the highest peak in the area with an altitude of 1616 meters above sea level.
The area of Deskati includes many interesting churches and monasteries. Some of the most interesting are the monasteries of Evaggelismou, Zabordas, Saint Sotiras and others. Other interesting sites include an old building used in the 1800 century by the Turkish occupiers as a command center.
Deskati Talent
Famous people from Deskati include the poet Chris Brovas one of the most important Greek poets in the 1970s and the artist Chris Bouronikos that now lives and works in Berlin. Some of his creations are displayed in various parts of Deskati.
